Kazakhstan National Committee "Man and Biosphere"

Kazakhstan MAB National Committee and EABRN Secretariat UNESCO with the support of Korean National Commission for UNESCO and the Ministry of Environment, Kazakhstan National Commission for UNESCO and ISESCO and UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University will organize the 15th Meeting of the East Asian Biosphere Reserve Network (EABRN) in Almaty.

The Meeting will participate representatives from seven EABRN member states - China, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Republic of Korea and Russian Federation, representatives from biosphere reserves in EABRN and other MAB regional networks such as SeaBRnet (Southeast Asian Biosphere Reserve Network), SACAM (South and Central Asian Network for MAB) and PacMAB (Pacific MAB). Also participants from the relevant organizations such as UNESCO, UNDP, IUCN, WWF, etc. and representatives of key governmental agencies and local communities in Kazakhstan will arrive. Thus, it is planned to have about 70 participants.

The theme of the meeting is “Biosphere Reserves and the 2030 Agenda”. The meeting will primarily focus on the Lima Action Plan (LAP) and the EABRN strategy for its implementation considering the regional concerns and realities and will come out with recommendations for national action plans. The main goal of the event is to elaborate recommendations to implement Lima Action Plan in the context of EABRN region. During the meeting exchanging information and experience on conservation and management of Biosphere Reserves will take place, as soon as carrying out a field evaluation for the Altyn Emel Biosphere Reserve, evaluation of EABRN’s achievements and setting new priorities for the network and elaboration of an activity plan for EABRN cooperation for future.

The Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi will host the 7th Meeting of the Kazakhstan National MAB Committee in February 19, 2016 on the 4th floor of Library Building (White Hall). The agenda will include the issues of preparation of the Kazakh delegation to the 4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves and the 28th session of the UNESCO MAB ICC in Lima City (Peru, March 14-19, 2016).

All-Russian conference "UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in Russia: current state and prospects of development" started its work on December 8 at Sochi. More than 80 experts (mainly reserves of directors), including guests from Belarus and Kazakhstan take part in the meeting.

The 6th meeting of the Kazakhstan National Committee of the UNESCO "Man and Biosphere" was held in the White Hall of the Kazakh National Library December 22, 2015. The meeting addressed a number of important questions:

Meeting on the nomination of Ustyurt reserve for the status of a World Natural Heritage Site was held on December 11 in the city of Aktau. During the work the reports of the initiative group, headed by Telman Dietrich (NABU), on the criteria for inclusion in the UNESCO list of world nature heritage, results of the research trip in protected areas of Mangistau region and presentations on the threats from the gaz site Kansu to Ustyurt Reserve were presented.

The 4th and final day of the 14th session of East-Asian Biosphere Reserve Network  (9 October 2015) was devoted to current and common problems of the network: the Statue was renewd, the themes for future training courses discussed, options for network activities for the upcoming 4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves (March 14-17, 2016 Lima, Peru) also discussed and more.


On the third day of the meeting participants of the East Asia Network of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, the reports of network members (Japan, China, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Kazakhstan) were given. Member of MAB National Committee Ms. Elina Maltseva spoke on behalf of Kazakhstan with 45 minute review report, she highlighted the recent achievements of the MAB Programme in Kazakhstan: 

In the second day of the session a trip to the buffer zone of the Shiga Highlands Biosphere Reserve was organized. Narrow trails lead all participants to the same goal - to climb to an altitude of 2500 meters and see the beauty of Japanese nature reserve. After enjoy the mountain air, cool, and of course the amazing beauty of the park, the group went to a local farm for growing fruit crops. Huge juicy apples with no less delicious grapes were the reward for a tour of the park. 

In 6th October 2016 the Chairman of the MAB committee, Professor Roman Jashenko and members of the committee E.R. Maltseva and A.K. Imentay participated in the 14th meeting of the East Asian Biosphere Reserves Network from Kazakhstan. On the first day of the session the country reports were heard: Japan, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia and South Korea. 

The meeting of the working group on the development of the MAB UNESCO Plan of Action Man and the Biosphere Programme 2016-2025 took place on 1-2 September at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris, the participants were members of the OIE and 6 international experts.

The 39th session of the International World Heritage Committee (WHC) of UNESCO was started in June 28, 2015 in Bonn (Germany).
